Hopelessness, as illustrated in the case of Payton, is seen as an especially crucial psychological factor, even more so than depression. Payton, for example, had 3 unsuccessful marriages, lost his job and was elderly (all “high risk” factors). Cognitive therapy was found to be more helpful than antidepressant drugs.(JA)
