Self help groups are seen as focused in 8 ways ranging from groups for compulsive behaviors such as Alcoholics Anonymous, to traumatic separations such as Single Parent groups. The values include counteracting isolation or alienation, prevention of further psychosocial processes, emphasis on personal responsibility within a supportive setting to educational aspects focussed on coping skills. Dangers are implied within this widespread movement, but not seen as outweighing the enormous benefits.
