Explores the theory that loss of a marriage partner has impact due to the functional significance of the lost partner within the couple’s system of associations. 5 basic functions in the interpersonal support system of separated people are postulated: intimacy, guidance & assistance, competency, companionship, & nurturance. If the last partner provided 2 or 3 of these functions & no other involvements provided them, the survivor will have a severely disrupted support system. (RM)
