The experiences of the author in establishing a program of mental health consultation with an urban police department are described. 3 phases of consultation are identified and analyzed. These are entry, familiarization and implementation. Possible sources of resistance are identified and ways of dealing with them are discussed. It is concluded that mental health professionals need to understand the social role and operational patterns of policemen, to function effectively as consultants.(SIEC)
