Data from 100 subjects show that widows have more psychological problems than a comparison group of women. Widows living alone with children report higher stress levels than others living alone or with children & someone else. More stress is reported by widows whose husbands had a final illness of less than 2 months than those whose husband’s final illness was 1 year or more. Widowhood seems to be a major crisis which is manifested in psychological stress.
