Study of 34 severely depressed self-abusive and/or suicidal latency-age children (4 to 12 yrs) at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. Findings reveal high incidence of family pathology, conflict with overt violence and parental rejection. 3-year follow-up shows improved functioning, reduced suicidal behaviours and no completed suicides following therapeutic interventions.
