There is evidence from twin studies that there are genetic factors in suicide. Among persons who commit suicide, there is a high rate of mental illness, particularly manic-depressive, schizophrenia & alcoholism. Likewise, among manic-depressive & schizophrenic patients, there is a higher rate of suicide in comparison with control populations.
