This article discusses how nurses can use no-suicide contracts when dealing with suicidal patients. Patients often will attempt to alter the terms of the contract by making it more nebulous in duration or wording. However, the author recommends trying to have the patient agree to specific timeframes or conditions. A brief case history is used to illustrate the potential use of such a contract. Twiname cautions against using the no-suicide contract as a replacement for lethality assessment.
