Symptoms of anxiety and depression in a sample of 82 patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh were assessed using the S.A D. scale. Mean anxiety and depression were significantly higher than those of normal subjects. Women had higher anxiety scores than men and were more frequently disturbed and ill. Symptoms measured by this scale includes: anxiety, suicidal ideation, mood, intensity and ruminative anxiety.
