The assertion that newspaper reporting of suicidal behavior precipitates suicide among suggestible readers was examined. Suicide rates during periods of complete cessation of newspaper reporting in 7 cities were compared with mean rates for the same calendar periods of the prior 5 years in each city. Results revealed no significant change during the experimental periods. (14 refs.)
