Coroners in Ontario – along with the Ontario Forensics Pathology Service – are tasked with ensuring that no death will be overlooked, concealed, or ignored. While not all deaths require investigation, coroners are charged with investigating all non-natural deaths as well as natural deaths that occur in certain circumstances, including: deaths that occur suddenly and unexpectedly; deaths at a construction or mining site; deaths while in police custody or while in a jail or prison; deaths where use of force by a police officer is the cause of death; and deaths that appear to be the result of an accident, suicide, or homicide. The focus of this report is suicide deaths in Ontario across the 34 public health units (PHUs) (a PHU map with legend can be found on page 12).
