The Sardinian puzzle: Concentration of major psychoses and suicide in the same sub-regions across one century.

Background: Sardinia, the second largest Mediterranean island has long been considered a privileged observatory for the study of several medical conditions. The peculiar epidemiology of mood disorders and suicide across Sardinian sub-regions has long intrigued clinicians and researchers. Objective: The principal aim of the present study was to test whether the geographical distribution of suicides […]

Shattered dreams

A powerful and emotional exploration of the experiences of a family forced to deal with the tragedy of schizophrenia in a loved one: not once, but twice. The Martini family of Calgary lived through the turmoil of losing their youngest son Ben to Schizophrenia and eventually suicide, only to discover six years later that a […]

Self-harm and suicide attempts in schizophrenia.

Highlights • One fourth of schizophrenia patients reported self-harm including suicide attempt. Prevalence of suicide attempts was 10% in the sample. Fifty percent of attempted suicide was within one year of onset of illness. Current age and past month GAF were significantly correlated with suicide attempt. Insecticide or overdose of medication was most common method of suicide […]

The unraveling: How our caregiving safety net came unstrung and we were left grasping at threads, struggling to plait a new one.

Olivier Martini and his mother, Catherine, have lived together since he was diagnosed with schizophrenia thirty-six years ago. It hasn’t always been a perfect living situation, but it’s worked — Catherine has been able to help Olivier through the ups and downs of living with a mental illness, and Olivier has been able to care […]

Suicidal ideation and schizophrenia: Contribution of appraisal, stigmatization, and cognition.

To predict suicidal ideation in people with schizophrenia, certain studies have measured its relationship with the variables of defeat and entrapment. The relationships are positive, but their interactions remain undefined. To further their understanding, this research sought to measure the relationship between suicidal ideation with the variables of loss, entrapment, and humiliation.

Clinical significance of psychotic-like experiences in children and adolescents.

Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are subtle, subclinical hallucinations and delusions which are quite common in general population. In children and youth prevalence rate is probably age-dependent with higher rate in younger population. PLEs are suggested to be a form of extended psychosis phenotype. Similar demographic, genetic and environmental risk factors observed for PLEs and schizophrenia support […]

Reducing smoking reduces suicidality among individuals with psychosis: Complementary outcomes from a Healthy Lifestyles intervention study.

This study explored impact of smoking reduction on suicidality among people with psychosis. • At 12 months, smoking reduction was significantly associated with reduction in suicidality. At 12 months, smoking reduction was significantly associated with reduction in depression. Association between smoking and suicidality change remained statistically significant after adjusting for depression. Depression accounted for […]

Autoimmune diseases and severe infections as risk factors for schizophrenia: A 30-year population-based register study.

Objective: Autoimmune diseases have been associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia. It has been suggested that brain-reactive autoantibodies are part of the mechanisms behind this association. Furthermore, an increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier has been observed during periods of infection and inflammation. The authors therefore investigated whether autoimmune diseases combined with exposures to […]

Risk assessment and suicide by patients with schizophrenia in secondary mental healthcare: A case-control study.

Objectives To investigate the role of risk assessment in predicting suicide in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) receiving secondary mental healthcare. We postulated that risk assessment plays a limited role in predicting suicide in these patients. Design Retrospective case–control study. Setting Anonymised electronic mental health record data from the South London and Maudsley National […]

Childhood maltreatment increases the risk of suicide attempt in schizophrenia.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of several types of childhood trauma on lifetime suicide attempt in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Methods We interviewed 361 participants with schizophrenia. Childhood trauma was collected using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Suicidal attempts were confirmed using subjective and objective validated scales. We applied an observational study […]

The twenty-year trajectory of suicidal activity among post-hospital psychiatric men and women with mood disorders and schizophrenia.

Journal copy held in CSP Library.

The relationship between violence and the clinical features, insight and cognitive functions of patients with schizophrenia.

Objective: We aimed to investigate factors associated with violent behavior in schizophrenia and to clarify the relationship between violent behavior and insight and cognitive functions. Method: 68 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were separated into two groups that included patients with a history of violent behavior (n = 30) and those patients without prior history of […]

Using telehealth to augment an intensive case monitoring program in veterans with schizophrenia and suicidal ideation: A pilot trial.

Veterans with schizophrenia admitted for suicidal ideation were recruited into a post-discharge program consisting of Intensive Case Monitoring (ICM) with daily monitoring with the Health Buddy (HB; experimental group) or ICM alone (control group). This study tested the feasibility of the telehealth monitoring intervention in this population. Secondly, we determined whether augmentation of ICM with […]

Negative cognitions about the self in patients with persecutory delusions: An empirical study of self-compassion, self-stigma, schematic beliefs, self-esteem, fear of madness, and suicidal ideation.

Patients with persecutory delusions had marked negative self cognitions. Low self-compassion, low self-esteem and increased fears of madness were found. Also beliefs of inferiority, negative self-schemas, and low positive self-schemas. Suicidal ideation was highly associated with several negative self constructs.

Higher total cholesterol level is associated with suicidal ideation in first-episode schizophrenia females.

There are inconsistent reports showing that the relationship between total cholesterol (TC) level and suicidality might be gender-specific. We compared 30 first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients reporting suicidal ideation based on the Operational Criteria for Psychotic Illness (OPCRIT) checklist with 70 FES patients, who have never experienced suicidal ideation. After controlling for potential confounders, higher TC […]

Bipolar disorder, affective psychosis, and schizophrenia in pregnancy and the post-partum period.

The perinatal period is associated with an increased risk of severe mental disorders. We summarise the evidence regarding the epidemiology, risk factors, and treatment of severe mental illness in relation to childbirth, focusing on bipolar disorder, affective psychosis, and schizophrenia. We discuss women with ongoing chronic conditions and those with the onset of new episodes […]

Is poor functioning a risk factor for suicide attempts in first-admission psychosis?

While poor premorbid functioning is associated with poorer outcomes in psychotic illnesses, little is known about whether it is also a risk factor for suicide attempts. Identifying those with poor premorbid functioning and prior histories of attempts could help clinicians target high-risk patients. Thus, greater attention to persons with both risk factors may form the […]

Is poor premorbid functioning a risk factor for suicide attempts in first-admission psychosis?

The current study examined the association of premorbid functioning and suicide attempts in a county-wide cohort of first-admission inpatients. Poorer premorbid functioning was significantly associated with increased likelihood of a suicide attempt prior to first psychiatric hospital admission. Specifically, 33.0% of participants with poor/declining premorbid functioning had a history of suicide attempts compared to 23.5% […]
