Issues From Liability Concerns to Contagion: Presentations Offer Insight Into Suicide Prevention

This brief article describes the community education presentations offered by the Lifeline Institute for Suicide Prevention in Washington state. Presentations focus on three areas: prevention, intervention & postvention. Lifeline has also helped schools develop policies & procedures to reduce liability issues in cases of suicidal behaviour by students.

This article provides ideas for suicide bereavement groups. The author describes a program in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He discusses the problems he had at the beginning of the program with ineffective publicity & low, inconsistent attendance. Reducing Suicide in Western Samoa

The author investigated all suicides occurring in Western Samoa from 1970-81 (n=237). A special group was set up to study these suicides & to increase public knowledge of the problem. A reduction in the suicide rate was experienced following this educational program. (NBB)

This 2-part study attempts to determine public level of awareness for the PACE crisis line service & suicide prevention program services & attempts to measure the level of suicide behaviors in Grand Prairie. A random sample of 1% of households were surveyed by trained volunteers using a specially developed questionnaire.
