This study investigated the validity and reliability of the Suicidal Intent Scale as a measure of the seriousness of a suicide attempt. 194 completed suicides had higher scores on the scale than 231 attempters. In addition, 19 attempters who reattempted suicide within 1yr. discharge had greater suicidal intent than attempters who did not.

A factor analysis of a scale to assess suicidal intent showed four major dimensions: expectancies and attitudes, premeditation, precautions against intervention, and oral communication. Certain types of actions associated with attempted suicide such as seeking help or social isolation appear to be revealing of particular behavioral patterns or motives.

Clarified the intentional aspect of parasuicide. Contrasting elements were presented as a list of 11 alternative behaviors possible in such a situation. Data indicate that an overdose may have a respite function for low suicidal intent patients.
