The effects of 2 forms of social control were studied in 2 cultures–Finland & the United States-employing the Freudian proposition developed by Henry & Short. Analyses of data collected revealed differences in group orientation between the 2 subcultures. The American subculture showed a higher degree of social control, higher homicide rate & a lower suicide rate than the Finnish. The evidence to support the hypotheses is not conclusive.
