243 psychiatric patients with a family history of suicide were compared to 5602 patients without a family history of suicide. A family history of suicide was found to significantly increase the risk of attempted suicide in patients with a wide variety of diagnoses: schizophrenia, affective disorders, depressive neurosis & personality disorders. Discussion includes possible genetic factors in suicide. (RM)
