Global Warming Possibly Linked to an Enhanced Risk of Suicide: Data From Italy, 1974-2003

This study explored the impact of global warming on suicide mortality, using data from Italy. Monthly data on suicide mortality & temperature were obtained for 1974-2003 & the relation between them was investigated using the Gaussian low-pass filter, linear correlation analysis, & rank analysis. For males, increasing anomalies in monthly average temperatures associated to a higher monthly suicide mean from May-August &, to a lower extent, November-December. In January, increasing anomalies in monthly average temperatures appeared to be coupled to a lower number of suicides. For females, the links between temperature & suicides are less consistent than for males, & sometimes have a reverse sign, too. (49 refs.) JA
