Gallagher R P~~Weaver-Graham W~~Taylor R
This 2005 survey includes data provided by directors from 366 counselling centres representing institutions from numerous American states & Canadian provinces. Respondents reported 154 student suicides in the previous year, 27 of them current or former counselling centre clients. 75% of victims were males, 83% were undergraduates, & most occurred off-campus. 32% were known to have made previous attempts. Most colleges provided a variety of services for students at risk of suicide including counselling centers, medical services, stress reduction workshops, emergency services, & off-campus referral networks. Less than 50% of directors reported that schools provided adequate campus-wide education about suicide prevention & postvention.
