Kashani J H~~Suarez L~~et al
This study examined familial & individual variables in children at high risk for suicide & non-suicidal children. 100 inpatient children & adolescents completed questionnaires to assess family dysfunction & individual behaviour problems. Suicidal children were found to have lower pride in their families & perceived them as less adaptable. Suicidal children also exhibited self-inflicted behaviours, withdrawal from others, little interest in activities, poor concentration, & difficulties with sleeping. Findings suggest suicidal childrens’ negative perceptions of their families & their maladaptive behaviours should be given special attention in designing appropriate interventions. (33 refs.)
