This report is part of a continuing investigation in which an evolution was noted in the way Western artists portrayed the subject of suicide in visual works of art. The trend was from heroic to stigmatized, to irrational and depressed with more recent examples stressing the ambivalent and call for help qualities. During the same period 35 artists of comparable stature are known to have committed suicide.
