This study examined the association between self-reported mixed anxiety & depression & mortality in the general population. A population survey of 2624 Norwegian individuals was defined in 3 groups according to their total score on the Hospital Anxiety & Depression Rating Scale. 114 deaths occurred during 4.5 years. Only the highest score group had increased mortality risk after adjustment for all relevant confounding factors. All seven suicides occurred in cases detected at baseline.
