Psychosocial Predictors and Correlates of Suicidality in Teenage Latino Males

Ecodevelopmental factors were tested as they influenced suicidality in a community sample of 349 Latino adolescent males. Risk factors tested included childhood maltreatment, parental alcohol-related problems, & polysubstance problems. Protective factors included general self-efficacy, social conformity, & family bonding. The strongest protective factors against suicidality were problem-solving confidence, a good relationship with parents,& being law-abiding. The strongest risk factors were emotional abuse, hard drug use, mother’s alcohol-related problems, & sexual abuse. (45 refs.)
