This article reports on important research in Pune, India, concerning the use of several provisions under Indian criminal law that were designed to protect women against dowry-related atrocities & various forms of domestic violence. The article outlines the relevant legislation, examines in detail judicial reactions to a large number of complaints under s.498-A of the Indian Penal Code of 1860, & concludes by making a number of recommendations in order to improve the protection of women with regard to domestic violence. Legal liability on the part of abusive husbands for the suicide deaths of their abused wives is discussed. (33 refs)
