The literature on the mortality of depression was assessed with respect to 5 issues, including the contribution of suicide. 57 studies were identified. Only 6 studies controlled for 1 of 4 major mediating factors (severity of physical illness, smoking, alcohol, & suicide). The authors found that suicide accounted for less than 20% of the deaths in psychiatric samples, & less than 1% in medical and community samples. (71 refs)
