This review focuses on the signs & symptoms of akathisia, & its diagnosis & assessment using the Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale. Akathisia, a syndrome of motor restlessness, is primarily associated with treatment using antipsychotic medication, & also occurs as a side-effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The relationship between akathisia & suicidality is discussed. (84 refs)
