The author explores the nature & meaning of adolescent risk-taking behaviours, highlighting the similarities & differences between risk-taking & suicidal behaviours. The concepts of awareness & vertigo are examined as they pertain to adolescent risk-taking, & gender differences related to risk-taking are identified. The significance of so-called “rites by ordeal” & “rites of passage” is also examined. (14 refs)
