Results of a random sampling of suicide prevention center directors suggested that etiological models of suicide behavior that emphasize environmental stress &/or a preponent vulnerability are the most commonly held perceptions of the causes of suicide. The category that included both the stress & predisoposition models was advocated by 37.5% of the respondents & was the most frequently endorsed etiological conceptualization of suicidal behavior. The importance of these results & future research in this area are discussed in terms of linking theory & practice in suicide prevention.
