Suicide in the World: an Epidemiological Overview 1959-2000 (IN: Suicide – an Unnecessary Death, edited by D Wasserman)

The information presented in this chapter reflects the offical figures made available to the World Health Organization by its member states. Suicides rates by reporting countries are provided for the most current year available & by gender. In the discussion which follows it is noted the highest suicide rates for both men & women are found in Europe, more particularly Eastern Europe. More suicides are committed by people aged 5-44 years than by people aged 45 years & more. The age group in which most suicides are completed is 35-44 years for both men & women.
