It is the intent in this paper to illustrate various methodological & conceptual problems inherent in mortality studies in psychiatry. Various strategies which have been utilized in addressing four major aspects of all such studies – definition of the study population, ascertainment of death, psychiatric assessment, & statistical inference – will be reviewed critically. It is concluded there is no perfect mortality study design. Any particular design involves a trade-off of advantages & disadvantages. (47 refs.)
