Sexuality, Reproductive Cycle and Suicidal Behavior (IN: The International Handbook of Suicide and Attempted Suicide, edited by K Hawton & K van Heeringen)

This chapter reviews topics concerning sexuality & the reproductive cycle. First, the relationship between homosexuality & suicidal behaviour is reviewed, focusing initially on the evidence for an association with completed suicide & then with deliberate self-harm. Methodological issues concerned with research in this population are discussed. Next, the relationship between pregnancy & suicidal behaviour is considered. Pregnancy and the failure to complete it, voluntarily or otherwise, & the post-partum period are discussed. Finally, autoerotic asphyxia & its relationship to suicidal behaviour is discussed.
