Recommendations are presented concerning the content of physician education programs on depression. For recognition, educators should prioritize communication skills & the use of depression questionnaires. For diagnosis, emphasis should be on interpretation of symptoms in the medically ill, strategies for efficient diagnosis, & systematic approaches to assessing suicide risk. For treatment, more attention to the therapeutic alliance, staged therapy & improving medication adherence are indicated.
