Tested the hypothesis that following psychiatric hospitalization, those subjects who subsequently committed suicide would be distinguished from those who did not by the interaction of 2 circumstances: a state of defenselessness at the time of hospitalization & experience of adverse life events following release. Subjects were 40 male psychiatric inpatients, 20 who completed suicide following release & 20 controls. Results support the hypothesis.
