Approximately 10% of schizophrenic patients complete suicide & many more make serious attempts. In this paper, the authors briefly summarize the literature on identifying patients with schizophrenia who may be at high risk of suicide. They then discuss potential treatment approaches: 1) hospitalization; 2) somatic treatment; 3) psychotherapy; 4) family therapy; & 5) psychosocial rehabilitation. These options are offered as hypotheses rather than treatment guidelines. (88 refs.)
