The authors reported on a study which examined how common suicidal thoughts were among Norwegian doctors & how such thoughts related to psychological factors. In 1993, a questionnaire was completed by 1041 subjects. 10% of respondents had seriously thought of suicide & 1.5% had actually attempted suicide. Serious ideation was more common among psychiatrists, nonspecialists & surgeons. Serious ideation was also found to be associated with depression, anxiety, unmarried status & somatic problems.
