This editorial discusses the authors thoughts on various studies concerning the causes of suicide. A study by D. Hemenway suggests a dose-response relationship between the amount of cigarette smoking and subsequent death from suicide in nurses. Another study by C.Z.Garrison found his results point to a strong relationship between alcohol intake and suicide. It seems most likely that smoking is a marker for alcohol and an important third variable.
