This article notes a lack of empirical data regarding treatment of adolescent suicide attempters. Reasons suggested: high costs & difficulties in doing intervention studies; they are a heterogenous group; adolescents suicide attempters tend to drop out of treatment at a much higher rate than other adolescents in psychotherapy. The problem of treatment non-compliance is explored. Data from 4 studies of referral rates among adolescent suicide attempters seen in emergency departments is discussed.
