This article reviews the types of malpractice liability that mental health institutions in the USA experience & examines specific activities & practices that give rise to liability. Some factors which limit liability are briefly discussed. Areas of institutional liability are outlined, including things such as: sexual contact, failure to prevent suicide, misuse of pharmaceuticals, & involuntary detention. 22 steps that institutions should take to lower their risk are mentioned.
