People with HIV have psychosocial needs that begin with diagnosis & evolve over the course of the illness. A structure is described that allows hospital social workers to intervene early, to carry out comprehensive assessments, & to support these patients throughout their illness. Assessments should examine physical, cognitive & psychiatric functioning (including suicidal ideation or attempts), coping abilities, HIV-specific issues, support systems & the patient’s physical environment.
