Attempts to ground the ethical debate on physician-assisted suicide solely on the principles of respect for patient autonomy & relief of suffering fail to acknowledge the values & norms of medicine by which physicians should practice. In this article arguments are set forth to show that the practice of voluntary physician-assisted death as a last resort is compatible with doctors’ duties to practice competently & to avoid harming patients. It therefore does not violate professional integrity.
