This paper presents a literature review of research. Findings are discussed under risk factors, (sex, age, social factors, parasuicide, clinical factors, & alcohol); timing of a suicide in the course of an illness; methods of suicide by psychiatric patients; & treatments & compliance. Estimates of suicide prevalence among schizophrenic patients tend to vary. However, the numbers are significant. Key questions are raised in view of the move toward more community care. (26 refs.)
