This article reports on studies of the substance abuse/suicide linkage in completed suicides in Finland (reported 1991) & the USA (1986), & in suicide attempts in the United Kingdom (1992 & 1993). Good evidence suggests deficient problem-solving skills in suicide attempters, in part due to impairments of cognitive processing caused by alcohol & drugs. Preventative measures for adolescents must focus on reduced substance abuse & closer links between hospital & substance abuse services. (10 refs.)
