The purpose of this literature review was to identify & describe various strategies that have been utilized by Native people in Canada to achieve a more active role in their own health care. Participatory strategies were interpreted with respect to primary health care & community involvement in health indicators. The relevance of traditional medicine was considered. Over 60 participatory models were identified including some which deal with suicide prevention.
