This presentation examines cross-cultural data on religious beliefs & next-world beliefs, as a way of evaluating their general significance for suicide. It notes that little study of next-world beliefs has been done although clinical work with patients has frequently indicated their importance. Durkheim’s perspective, & beliefs of Catholics, Protestants, Hindus, Moslems, & preliterate societies are discussed. 2 sets of variables appear significant: sense of belonging & next-world beliefs.
