A number of psychological factors influence late life suicide. Depression, the most common mental disorder in later life, & alcoholism are major precipitating factors in elderly suicide. Many of the same factors which contribute to depression also increase the risk of alcoholism and/or suicide. Alcoholism, depression & suicide form a deadly triangle of which family, caregivers & practitioners need to be aware. (14 refs.)
