This article details the beliefs of the major writers who have studied the midlife period, including Buhler, Jung, & Erikson, & presents the results of a study on the contents of suicide notes. The study is based on Freud’s formulations about midlife. They find that Freud’s theories are more accurate in describing the events of early adulthood than midlife. They also present a number of suicide notes. (VM)
