The incidence of physician suicide is examined. Warning signs that a doctor may be contemplating suicide are discussed, e.g. depression, substance abuse (drugs or alcohol), age, & a major loss or a series of losses. Intervention techniques are also briefly discussed. 5 vignettes are used to profile which doctors may be more at risk of suicide. A chart provides suicide rates for different medical specialties; pediatricians had the lowest rates while psychiatrists had the highest suicide rates.
