This paper refutes D. Lester’s contention that the rate of mental illness among suicide victims is as low as 5-22%. The author analyzes the studies from which Lester based this comment. He finds that these studies used only documentation of previous psychiatric treatment to analyze whether a suicide victim was mentally ill, which would provide only minimum percentages. He provides data from other studies with much higher reported rates of mental illness. (VM)
