A common & easily overlooked problem in cancer patients is depression. Possible warning signs are listed. A procedure for evaluating depression & suicide risk is suggested: If a patient tells you something that suggests depression, allow him to talk it out; ask straight forward questions abaout suicide (sample conversations are given); arrange a mental health consultation. Action against depression includes encouraging self-care, increasing physical activity & correcting negative thinking. (KM)
