Society has come to expect mental health workers to prevent suicide. In this summary, the author discusses the historical background of responsibility for suicide & whether the current attitude is reasonable. He argues that mental illness is only an element in the multifactorial nature of suicide; involuntary psychiatric hospitalization does not decrease suicide, & using a case history, illustrates the difficulty of suicide evaluation.
