This brief summary describes a study in which 738 women were interviewed on admission to psychiatric inpatient units in San Francisco to determine if lesbianism is a significant factor in suicidal behavior. Lesbian/bisexual attempters differ from heterosexual attempters in many ways: they are more likely to come from broken homes, to be younger, more mobile, more educated, to abuse alcohol & other drugs, but they are not more likely to kill themselves within 5 years post-discharge.
